Fall in Love with "The Fantasticks" at
MCCC Kelsey Theatre July 25-Aug. 3

7/2/08

The age-old tale of boy meets girl is retold with classic showmanship and high style when the longest-running musical of all time comes to MCCC's Kelsey Theatre. The Pennington Players presents "The Fantasticks" Fridays and Saturdays, July 25, July 26, Aug. 1 and Aug. 2 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, July 27 and Aug. 3 at 2 p.m. Kelsey Theatre is located on the college's West Windsor campus at 1200 Old Trenton Road.

Drawing on plot elements reminiscent of Shakespeare and Rostand, "The Fantasticks" chronicles the budding romance between a boy named Matt and his neighbor Luisa. Their fathers hatch a plot to bring them together by appearing to be feuding, knowing the teens will be even more drawn to each other if their love is forbidden. They do fall in love, but are then separated by family drama and the need to mature and explore the world. When they are eventually reunited, they possess a deeper understanding of life and a greater appreciation of each other.

Featured in "The Fantasticks" are, front to back, Michael Schiumo as the narrator, Elizabeth Ferrante
as The Girl, and Eric Carsia as The Boy.

With book and lyrics by Tom Jones and music by Harvey Schmidt, the original production premiered in 1960 and ran Off-Broadway for more than 17,000 performances over 42 years. The show is packed with familiar tunes, including the memorable songs "Try to Remember," "Soon It's Gonna Rain" and "I Can See It."

The cast for "The Fantasticks" includes Eric Carsia as The Boy, Thomas Chiola as The Girl's Father, Elizabeth Ferrante as The Girl, Edgard Garcia as The Old Actor, David Jack as The Boy's Father, Rachel Messler as The One Who Dies, Michael Schiumo as The Narrator, and Stephanie Venanzi as The Mute.
