camp and a touch of silliness, "Dames at Sea"
chronicles the adventures of Ruby, fresh off the bus from Utah with only
a pair of tap shows in her suitcase. She quickly - very quickly - falls
in love with a sailor, who happens to be a songwriter, and then saves
a Broadway show by stepping in when the star can't go on.
Based on the book and lyrics by George Haimsohn and Robin Miller, and
music by Jim Wise, the show mixes parody with the real thing, and features
songs that are nostalgic, lyrical and exceedingly clever. And the joke
remains fresh - that a cast of six, with minimal accompaniment, can pull
off a spoof of the large, lavish movie musical genre in the 42nd Street
tradition. Starring a fresh young Bernadette Peters when it premiered
Off-Broaday in 1968, the show won the 1969 Outer Critics Circle Award
for Best Off-Broadway Musical and has been performed regularly in the
decades since, including an Off-Broadway run in 2004 at the Bouwerie Lane
Theatre, where it was first performed.
The cast includes Cathy Liebars as Mona, Liat Perelman as Joan, Jim Petro
as Dick, John Ragazzo as Lucky, Melissa Rittmann as Ruby, and Joe Zedeny
as Hennessey. The show is directed by Pete LaBriola, with musical direction
by Lou Woodruff and Pam Sharples, and choreography by Kat Ross.
