|
During the summer
months, Mercer County Community College (MCCC) offers a host of
enriching activities - not only for college students taking summer
classes, but for families of children ages 6-17, who may choose
from a wide variety of exciting summer camp programs. Registration
for MCCC's Camp College, Sports Camps, Tomato Patch Visual and Performing
Arts Workshops, and Specialty Camps has begun for the 2008 camp
season. MCCC's West Windsor campus is conveniently located at 1200
Old Trenton Road in West Windsor, N.J. Before and after-camp care
is available for all programs. Detailed information is available
here.
Camp
College is offered in three-week and four-week sessions
for children ages 6 to 12 from June 23-July 10 and July 14-August
7. Campers create their own schedule of up to six activities each
day Monday through Thursday from more than 80 academic, athletic,
and recreational options. Among this season's offerings are: "Around
the World," "Boys Rule," "Girls Club,"
"Chess Battles," and "Design Your Own Business."
Among this year's new options are "Artistic Imitations,"
"Cartooning," and "Collage Kaleidoscope." Additional
Friday programs may be added to the camper's schedule on an individual
basis, with destinations including The Academy of Natural Sciences,
Ice Land Skating Center, Build-A-Bear Workshop, and Six Flag's Great
Adventure Wild Safari. A "Pre-Camp Week" is scheduled
June 16-20 for girls and boys ages 6-13. Campers may register for
one, three or five days; activities include "Kids in the Kitchen,"
"Wild Thing," "Sensational Science," "Tails
and Trails Wildlife Refuge," the "Franklin Institute"
and "Summer Pool Party."
According to
Camp Director Rose Fiorello, Camp College provides children with
an alternative to traditional day camp. "Camp College offers
unique programs that encourage the child to personalize his or her
experience. Campers enjoy designing their own schedules according
to their interests. Each year we offer a fun variety of new classes
that are developed by a staff of certified teachers," she said.

Mercer's
Sports Camps
are the perfect solution for youngsters ages 7-17 with an interest in
athletic skill-building and competition. Now in their 34th season, these
week-long camps in 12 different sports utilize the expertise of college

Campers participate in conditioning and skill development sessions, along
with friendly games and tournaments. Awards are presented at the end of
each week for athletes who have excelled.
According
to MCCC Assistant Dean John Simone, emphasis is placed on building a solid
skill foundation with numerous opportunities for individualized instruction.
"We provide a fun atmosphere where young athletes not only strengthen
essential skills but also enjoy safe, friendly competition," Simone
said.
The
newest of the Sports Camps is "Mountain Biking," a one-week
experience that will focus on fundamental skills required for cross country
mountain bike racing, as well as racing etiquette and bicycle maintenance.
Campers will learn the proper position for maximum balance and control
as they navigate trails at Mercer County Park. The camp's staff includes
Greg Schipske and Rich Carroll, avid cyclists who compete in the Mid-Atlantic
Super Series of Mountain Biking.

For young people with a passion for the arts, MCCC's Tomato
Patch is one of the longest-running multidisciplinary summer arts
programs in Central New Jersey. Established in 1973, it offers myriad
workshops in theater, dance, vocal music and visual arts. Students select
a major concentration in either the performing or visual arts, as well
as electives that allow them to branch out into other disciplines.
Making their debut this year are classes in hip-hop and cartooning and
anime. Other classes include children's theater, video production, "Whose
Line Is It Anyhow?", stage combat, computer art, painting, jazz,
and vocal ensemble.
Session I, which runs June 23-July 17, is open to students entering grades
8-12. Session II, July 21-Aug. 7, is for students entering grades 5-7.
Both programs conclude with "Festival of the Arts" events for
family and friends, featuring performances and an art exhibit. Each student
receives a t-shirt and a DVD of the festival.
An additional session is offered for 8th to 12th grade students who complete
the first Tomato Patch session. In "Master Class," from July
21-Aug. 8, participants will learn about the "business" of show
business with topics including preparing a polished audition piece and
resume, finding jobs, and auditioning for theater, movies and television.
The Master Class concludes with a performance on Aug. 8th.
According to Director Kitty Getlik, a few weeks can last a lifetime in
'the Patch.' "Many Tomato Patchers are now professional artists;
some have appeared on Broadway; and some have pursued teaching careers
in the arts. Others have gone on to fulfill different life ambitions yet
maintain lasting friendships formed in Tomato Patch," she said.
Both
Tomato Patch sessions meet Monday through Thursday. The cost for the first
session (four weeks) is $625; the second session (three weeks) is $525;
the Master Class is $475. There is a $25 non-refundable application fee.
For more information, call 570-3566, or e-mail projects@mccc.edu.
The registration form is available for printing here.
Online registration is also available on the Tomato Patch site.
