"Brighton Beach Memoirs" Offers Nostalgic Take on Brooklyn Family at Kelsey Theatre Oct. 3-12

9/9/08

Brooklyn circa 1937 will be affectionately recreated at MCCC's Kelsey Theatre in October. Maurer Productions OnStage presents the Neil Simon classic, "Brighton Beach Memoirs," Fridays and Saturdays, October 3, 4, 10 and 11 at 8 p.m., and Sundays, Oct. 5 and 12 at 2 p.m. A reception with the cast and crew follows the opening night performance. Kelsey Theatre is located on Mercer's West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.

Simon draws a poignant, semi-autobiographical portrait of a Jewish-American family, as seen through the eyes of 15-year-old Eugene Jerome, a fledgling writer who documents his observations in a daily journal. In between obsessing over girls and baseball, he paints a rich picture of his colorful relatives, all living together under one roof in post-Depression, pre-World War II Brooklyn. There's his overworked father Jack, under-appreciated mother Kate, somewhat worldly older brother Stanley, his widowed Aunt Blanche, and his cousins Nora and Laurie.

"Brighton Beach Memoirs" is the first installment in Simon's Eugene trilogy, which also includes "Biloxi Blues" and "Broadway Bound." Opening on Broadway in 1983, the production garnered a New York Drama Critics' Circle Award for Best Play.

The Maurer Productions cast includes Dominick Sannelli as Eugene Jerome, Robert Fisher as Stanley Jerome, Jennifer DeVenio as Kate Jerome, James Houston as Jack Jerome, Leta Brehme as Aunt Blanche, Kristin Bennett of Montville as Cousin Nora, and Delia Bannon as Cousin Laurie. The show is directed by Alycia Bauch-Cantor and produced by John Maurer, Diana Gilman Maurer and Dan Maurer. Two of the shows they produced at Kelsey last season, "Driving Miss Daisy" and "Singin' in the Rain," earned a total of 17 Perry Award nominations.

Tickets for "Brighton Beach Memoirs" are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors, and $10 for students and children. Free parking is available next to the theater. Tickets may be purchased online or by calling the Kelsey Box Office at 609-570-3333. Kelsey Theatre is wheelchair accessible and provides assisted listening devices upon request.
