"Bat
Boy, the Musical" is a classic love story with a serious
bite. The show is presented by Stars in the Park as part of the
2007 Summer Series at MCCC's Kelsey Theatre on Fridays, July 27
and Aug. 3 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, July 28 and Aug. 4 at 8 p.m.; and
Sundays, July 29 and Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. Kelsey Theatre is conveniently
located on Mercer's West
Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.
Combining shades
of Shakespeare, Greek tragedy and classic Broadway, "Bat Boy"
examines the human - and not so human - condition. When three teenagers
discover a creature who is half-bat, half-boy in a West Virginia
cave, a story of young love is set in motion against the backdrop
of a town that must examine its own issues with intolerance and
inhumanity. Will the townspeople open their hearts to this unusual
boy who longs for acceptance, or vilify him because he is different?
With songs including
"Hold Me Bat Boy," "Let Me Walk Among You,"
"Show You a Thing or Two," and "Ugly Boy," the
musical score boasts a winning mix of upbeat rock, hip-hop, tango,
gospel, and even classic "soft shoe." Written by Keythe
Farley and Brian Flemming and first performed Off-Broadway in 2001,
"Bat Boy" promises to be a memorable and adventurous addition
to Kelsey's summer lineup.
