Mid-Career Change Creates "Graphic"
New Direction for Alum Seth Rivkin

4/8/08

Corporate downsizing enabled Seth Rivkin, who earned his Mercer degree in Computer Graphics in 1994, to pursue his passion. Today, he is president of DesignPulse.biz, a "customer-centric" integrated marketing, advertising and web design firm based in West Trenton, N.J. The company's approach is to stay focused on the customer, producing campaigns that "market to the customer rather than at the customer."

Rivkin decided to return to college after being laid off from GE Astro Space in East Windsor, N.J., where he worked as a technical and management information training specialist. (GE eventually closed its East Windsor location.) Intent on finally "following his dream" of becoming a professional graphic designer, Rivkin learned about the high caliber of Mercer's specialized program in Graphic Design. Taking on a full course load, he completed the degree requirements in just three semesters and landed a position as an art director at a midsize ad agency in Mercer County. From there, he gained experience at other regional agencies, working as a freelance consultant and as an associate design manager for Merck & Co. Inc. world headquarters.

Opportunity knocked repeatedly as Rivkin sought a position closer to home. He eventually joined the staff of Educational Testing Service in Princeton as director of design services in the Publishing Services Division. During his successful stint with ETS, a former client requested Rivkin's services to develop a branding campaign, corporate identity package, website design and ad series. According to Rivkin, as the project grew, so did the need for a business presence. He established DesignPulse.biz in 1998.

As an entrepreneur, Rivkin is responsible for every detail of his company - from making client contacts to attending meetings, making presentations and handling billings. One day he is designing an ad for a local client, and the next day he is traveling overseas to make presentations for world-class pharmaceutical companies.
Rivkin is grateful that MCCC gave him the set of tools he needed to launch his career. "There's something very fresh and uplifting about the faculty and staff," Rivkin said. "Mel Leipzig and Joan Needham quickly come to mind. Mel is a world-renowned artist whose life experiences and knowledge are amazing and Joan has such a tremendous gift in her genuine style of reaching people to get them to produce their artwork from the heart. From the basics in drawing and 3D modeling, computer graphics and advertising design, the skills I learned are key factors in my success today."

Rivkin is excited about DesignPulse.biz's recent partnership with a company involved in clothing technologies. He's also proud of his company's pro-bono work for the Mercer County fire and police associations and several emergency response organizations in Mercer County.

"My business has provided me with opportunities to design for some of the largest companies in the world and to also give back to my community," he said. "Doing something I love is a great way to earn a living."
