West Windsor, N.J. –When the Trenton Central High School (TCHS) District Inspirational Gospel Choir headed on stage at Mercer County Community College’s Kelsey Theatre as part of Gospel Fest 2014 on Saturday, they were greeted with enthusiastic applause.
They also received an unexpected gift from the crowd that will help them close in on their goal of performing at the national “Music in the Park” competition in Los Angeles, Calif., in May, as returning champions.
As Choir Director Gary Taylor announced the group, he noted that choir members were raising funds to get to the West Coast. And that’s when MCCC staff members Lucia Brown-Joseph and Terrence Carter decided to initiate an impromptu fundraiser. MCCC President Patricia C. Donohue was one of the first to donate as the basket was circulated. By the end of the event, audience members had contributed $700.
“Some people gave us the cash from their pockets, and others wrote checks,” Brown-Joseph said. “It was very gratifying to see community members come together to support the choir.”
On March 5, Schools Superintendent Francisco Duran, TCHS Principal Hope Grant and TCHS West Principal Addie Daniels-Lane came to MCCC’s West Windsor campus to meet with President Donohue. Grant noted how grateful the school is for the community’s generosity and for its strong relationship with the college.
“Our 22-member choir performs all over the city and the state. This kind of support validates the time and effort they put into making the choir the best it can be,” Grant said. “Membership in the choir is such a worthwhile activity, helping our students recognize how talented, valued and loved they are.”
She adds that the choir is still actively raising funds for its trip. Community members interested in contributing should contact Jane Howard at the Trenton Board of Education by calling 609-656-4900.
