MCCC Men's Basketball to Play at D.C. Verizon Center

West Windsor, N.J. -- Members of the Mercer County Community College men's basketball program enjoyed a thrill last season during a break from a tournament at Frederick (Md.) Community College. The Vikings held a practice at Georgetown University and met with Hoyas head coach John Thompson III.

On Saturday, December 5, the Vikings will have an even more memorable day involving Georgetown's storied program. MCCC will play Frederick in a game that precedes a Georgetown game at the Verizon Center in Washington, D.C.

MCCC second-year head coach Howard Levy, who has been friends with Thompson for over 25 years, will guide his squad against Frederick in a noon contest. At 4 p.m., Georgetown is set to play American University at the 20,173-seat arena.

"I had the idea for the game and John got it done," Levy said.

The Vikings, who play at Delaware Tech-Stanton the evening before their Verizon Center game, will watch the Georgetown-American game before returning to the MCCC campus. Levy is hopeful his players and assistant coaches will get to meet with Thompson again.

Levy was a senior center for Princeton during the 1984-85 season when Thompson was a freshman forward. They remained friends through the years and eventually coached together for eight seasons at Princeton. Thompson left to become Georgetown's head coach in 2004.

In addition to being the home court for Georgetown men's basketball, the Verizon Center is home to the NBA's Washington Wizards, the NHL's Washington Capitals and the WNBA's Washington Mystics.
