Photo Exhibit, Recollections of Holocaust Survivor Vera Goodkin Planned for Holocaust Remembrance Day at MCCC

4/4/14

WEST WINDSOR – A photo exhibit of Holocaust images and a presentation by survivor Dr. Vera Goodkin will highlight observance of Holocaust Remembrance Day, April 22, at the Mercer County Holocaust/Genocide Resource Center on the West Windsor campus of Mercer County Community College (MCCC).

Photographer Jerry Casciano’s exhibit “Surviving the Plan” contains 20 photos that were taken in the ruins of Auschwitz, Treblinka, and the Warsaw Ghetto, along with photos of 10 survivors – all of whom are New Jersey residents. The photos will remain on display through Sept. 1.

Guest speaker for the event is Goodkin, professor emeritus at MCCC, who escaped the Holocaust with the help of famed rescuer Raoul Wallenberg. Goodkin and her parents fled to Budapest, Hungary, after they were betrayed in their hiding place in Czechoslovakia in 1944. Their trek to Budapest led them through muddy fields on a cold, rainy night. They ultimately survived only with the help of Wallenberg, a Swiss diplomat who is credited with saving as many as 100,000 Jews during the Holocaust.

The exhibit and lecture is from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Center, located on MCCC’s West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road, on the second floor of the Library Building. The lecture is free and open to the public, with two hours of professional development credit available for educators. To register, visit http://education.state.nj.us/events/.

For more information on the lecture or the Mercer County Holocaust-Genocide Resource Center, email mcholgen@gmail.com or visit the website at www.mccc.edu/holocaust.

The event is sponsored by the New Jersey Commission on Holocaust Education.
