In the Visual Arts at Mercer County Community College there is something to pique everyone’s interest. Our program is designed to balance traditional and contemporary approaches to the arts. What does that mean? You will learn techniques used by artists to create objects and images that are as ancient as civilization and as cutting edge as science fiction. Our program integrates all forms of technology from your bare hands to the computer to give you a foundation in the process of making that will serve as a basis for many degree paths at four-year institutions. Visual Arts majors at MCCC learn the technical processes of making as well as develop a strong understanding of the conceptual reasons behind what artists make. In other words you will learn the “How” as you develop a voice that explains “Why” you do what you do. Whether you are just learning to draw, throwing pots in the ceramics studio, designing on the computer for a screen print in the printmaking studio, painting from a live model, building a public sculpture, or learning color theory MCCC Visual Arts has something for you.

Our program is designed with transfer in mind. We have worked with a number of transfer institutions to craft a degree plan that correlates to the first two years of their programs. Our students have had great success transferring, and receiving scholarships, to the top art schools, liberal arts colleges and universities in the country.

The purpose of our program is to provide you with a base for success in a number of creative fields, while at MCCC and after. Our degree serves as the core to multiple degree programs here at MCCC and at four-year institutions. Visual Arts shares facilities, professors, and classes with a number of related programs at MCCC like Photography, Digital Media Arts, Advertising + Graphic Design, Game Design, Digital Film, Fashion Design and more to give you a truly interdisciplinary experience. What do I mean by interdisciplinary? I mean you have the opportunity to explore all of these fields while working with faculty and students with a variety of interests and expertise.

CONCENTRATIONS:

Through the Art History concentration (VIS.HIS.AFA), students gain an understanding of the arts of both western and non-western societies, including so-called primitive cultures. Students study the history of painting, sculpture, architecture, printmaking, photography, and decorative arts not only in relation to aesthetics, but also in relation to and as an indicator of world history.

The Ceramics/Sculpture concentration (VIS.CER. AFA) provides students with both aesthetic understanding and broad-based knowledge of three-dimensional arts: design, ceramics, and sculpture. Students develop their creativity in and knowledge of a variety of three-dimensional media, technical processes, and traditions.

The Fine Arts concentration (VIS.FINE.AFA), with an emphasis on drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking courses, develops students’ technical skills and personal expression, and provides a deeper knowledge and appreciation of art history. This concentration is the foundation for design, art education, and other visual arts curriculums at 4 years.
