TRIO Upward Bound

What is TRIO Upward Bound?

TRIO Upward Bound is an educational program offered during the summer and academic year for high school students from low-income families; and families in which neither parent holds a bachelors degree. The goal of TRIO Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary school and graduate from institutions of postsecondary education. It strives to develop the academic and personal skills a student will need to successfully complete college. TRIO Upward Bound is funded by the United States Department of Education (Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965).

TRIO Upward Bound reflects Mercer County Community College's mission to provide services and activities that support individual student success. These services include:

  • Supplemental academic instruction
  • After school tutoring
  • Cultural enrichment activities
  • College visits
  • Peer and Group counseling
  • SAT preparation
  • ACT preparation
  • College application and financial aid instruction
Requirements

In order to be eligible for TRIO Upward Bound you must:

  • Attend high school
  • Meet eligibility guidelines
  • Demonstrate academic potential
  • Present recommendations from principals, teachers, and counselors
  • Live in Trenton, New Jersey
  • Attend Trenton Public High Schools
  • Students that do not attend Trenton Public Schools may be accepted on a case by case basis​

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Upward Bound is to encourage and assist people who are traditionally under-represented in post-secondary education because of income, family educational background, disability, or other relevant federal, state, provincial or institutional criteria, in the preparation for entry to, and completion of a post-secondary education.
