New Pathways to Teaching in New Jersey
Alternate Route to Teacher Certification Program
The Center for Continuing Studies is pleased to offer the Alternate Route to Teacher Certification program, approved by the NJ Dept. of Education and in collaboration with New Jersey City University (NJCU).
Students will have the option of enrolling on a not-for-credit (certificate) basis, or
a credit basis, which will award 15 graduate credits toward NJCU's Master of Arts
in Teaching degree.
Admission Qualifications
To be considered for admission you need:
- A minimum of a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with a major in, or related to, your intended teaching field.
- A minimum grade point average of 2.75 in your undergraduate studies or the highest degree earned.
- Certificate of Eligibility issued by the State of New Jersey.
- A provisional teaching position in September

Introduction to the Teaching Profession:
24-hour pre-service program
This course meets the New Jersey Department of Education requirement prior to filing for your Certificate of Eligibility.
20 hours of instruction and 4 hours of classroom observation
Course (Instruction) meets: November 2-December 10, 2009, Monday and Thursday evenings, 6:30-8:30pm
