Funeral Service
Associate in Applied Science Degree
[see also Certificate Program]
The goal of the Funeral Service programs
is to provide students with professional training and completion of the
education requirements for licensure in funeral service. Academic emphasis
includes the areas of business management, public health, the social, behavioral,
and natural sciences as well as the legal, technical, and regulatory aspects
of funeral service. To prepare students to embark upon a career in a service-oriented,
care-giving profession, these programs integrate the theoretical, practical, and technical
aspects of funeral service and emphasize the importance of life-long education
to meet evolving ethical, environmental, and social demands.
Students have two options for completion
of their professional education: Funeral Service Certificate or Funeral
Service Associate in Applied Science degree. (See also Certificate Programs - Funeral Services)
The Associate in Applied Science
program incorporates funeral service and general education courses to provide
graduates with an associate degree. Applicants for the A.A.S. degree program must
consult with the Director of Funeral Service Programs to insure that they have the
credits required for licensure. New Jersey and Pennsylvania students will need the A.A.S.
degree program plus an additional 30 credits in order to be eligible for licensure.
Students are responsible for securing part-time employment in an approved
New Jersey or eastern Pennsylvania funeral home in order to complete the field
experience courses. Students must be registered as an intern with the New Jersey
State Board of Mortuary Science or as a student/trainee with the Pennsylvania
Board of Funeral Directors.
The Funeral Service programs offer embalming laboratory experience in a modern
embalming facility. Students in the Associate in Applied Science and the certificate
programs must take the National Board Exam to be eligible for graduation.
In addition, the programs are monitored
by an active advisory commission that provides advice on the latest developments
in funeral service. Both programs can be completed either full- or part-time.
Admission to the program requires a high school diploma or its equivalent,
competence in English and mathematics as demonstrated by placement testing,
and approval of the Director of Funeral Service Programs.
NOTE: Enrollment in any FUN
course requires approval of the Director of Funeral Service programs. New Jersey
and Pennsylvania students must complete 60 college credits before enrolling in
FUN courses. At the conclusion
of the program, the student will have a minimum of 96 credits.
