Computer Systems and Network Administration

Associate in Applied Science Degree in Business Management

Certificate of Proficiency

The associate degree and certificate programs in Computer Systems and Network Administration prepare students for immediate entry-level employment in a number of related career paths. The program provides students with the foundations required to build rewarding careers in the field as PC installers, computer desktop technicians, entry-level repair technicians, application support specialists and network administrators.

Because this field is increasingly diverse, students need to specialize early. Graduates who excel in their studies will be encouraged to seek formal certification through Microsoft's Certified Professional (MCP), Microsoft's Certified Desktop Support Technician (MCDST) and CompTIA's A+ Certification.

MCCC is located close to many corporate and governmental computing centers which employ computer professionals. Graduates are currently working as data communications technicians, PC installers, network administrators, desktop support technicians, and in many other technical support and supervisory positions in business, industry and government.

Successful graduates will be able to:

  • take the Microsoft certification test for application and operations system(s) (MCP);
  • take the Microsoft certification test for Desktop Support Technician (MCDST);
  • take the CompTIA A+ Certification
  • interpret operator documentation;
  • operate and effectively perform limited maintenance on peripheral devices;
  • describe the basic functions of an operating system;
  • characterize operating system features such as multiprogramming, spooling, virtual storage, and windowing;
  • demonstrate an understanding of networking system features such as spooling, resource sharing, directory rights, and work groups;
  • describe the danger of computer viruses and ways to safeguard against them;
  • recognize basic hardware errors and perform the necessary recovery procedures;
  • communicate effectively with other computer professionals;
  • implement basic troubleshooting procedures to solve or escalate client problems.

Computer Systems and Network Administration may be pursued full-time or part-time. Admission requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
