Digital Media Arts

Associate in Applied Science Degree in Visual Arts

The Digital Media Arts A.A.S. option of the Visual Arts program prepares students for entry-level positions in the areas of 3-D graphics and animation, multimedia and website design. Students may continue their studies in these fields or in film, video, or illustration.

Digital media arts is a rapidly changing field offering job opportunities in design firms; corporate training or communications departments; educational software companies; television, film and video effects houses; and other branches of the information and entertainment industries. Courses cover 3-D model building, lighting, animation, storyboards, concept sketches, painting and compositing, and web design and development.

The computer is the primary tool of expression in the program; however, emphasis is placed on drawing and the continuing development of creative thinking, art and design skills, and the ability to impart information and tell stories through images sequenced in time. Video production, writing and presentation skills are also essential to success in this field.

Several electives in the program allow students to tailor the major to their career goals. Because the field changes rapidly, it is important for students to consult their academic advisor to choose electives.

Most course work takes place in a studio using regularly updated professional-quality hardware and software on both Macintosh and PC computer platforms. Scholarships and cooperative education opportunities are available for qualified students.

Upon completing the program, the successful digital media arts graduate will be able to:

  • complete a professional portfolio/reel to enter the job market or to transfer to a four-year college;
  • demonstrate competence in design and production of 3-D animation or web design;
  • work successfully on both Macintosh and PC platforms;
  • show competence in writing and presenting project proposals and completed projects;
  • understand issues of intellectual property.

The program may be pursued full-time or part-time. Some courses may be offered only during the evening.

Notes: Take courses in the order in which they are listed below unless your Digital Media Arts academic advisor has advised you otherwise. All electives should be selected in consultation with your Digital Media Arts academic advisor. Students must earn a minimum grade of C in all ART, ADV, CGR, IST, PHO and CMN courses and professional electives in order to graduate.
