Property Management Program to Begin in Downtown Trenton

12-20-05

According to Mercer County Community College’s Jacky Sanders, former dean of the Business Division and now assistant provost of the James Kerney Campus, there are career opportunities available in the field of property management. To help students of all ages prepare for such careers, the college's Center for Continuing Studies is offering a noncredit certificate program beginning Jan. 23. Evening classes will take place at the college’s downtown Trenton James Kerney campus at North Broad and Academy Streets.

“Property managers handle the day-to-day operations of commercial and residential properties,” Sanders said. “There are a variety of career paths in the field, and sometimes on-site housing is part of the employment package.” She said part of a property manager’s job is enforcing the Americans with Disabilities Act and the Federal Fair Housing Act.

MCCC’s certificate program will consist of ten core courses, two electives, and 128 hours of field experience.

At a Nov. 9 seminar on "Careers in Real Estate," program coordinator Jacky Sanders, left, talks with the panelists, from left, Steve Friedman, vice president of Westgate Management Company; Keith Crowell of Century 21 Real Estate; Melody Clemons of Sovereign Bank, and Richard Ranson, Jr., president and CEO of Collegiate Title Corporation.

Although this is a noncredit program, graduates may be eligible to receive up to nine college credits if they enroll in the college’s Business Management associate degree program within two years of completing the certificate. All courses may be taken individually or as part of the certificate.

The first course offered for the spring semester will be “Overview of Residential and Commercial Property Management” on Monday and Wednesday evenings from Jan. 23 to Feb. 22, 6 to 8:30 p.m. Two courses offered in March will be “Contract Law and Leases” from March 13 to April 17, and “Leadership Skills and Delegation Methods” from March 15 to April 19.
