MCCC's MouthWorks! To Serve "Jello Baby" to Audiences Hungry for Laughs

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- Looking for an evening of zany comedy? You don't have to travel far. Mercer County Community College's MouthWorks! Troupe delivers that and more. High on energy and imagination, MCCC students will present "Jello Baby," an original script brainstormed by Assistant Professor of Communication Kathi Paluscio and students in her classes. The fun takes place Saturday, Dec. 6 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 7 at 6 p.m. at the Studio Theatre (CM 122), next to Kelsey Theatre on Mercer's West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road. Admission is free; no reservations are required.

Designed as a series of short skits both live and via video, the show exhibits many unique styles of comedy, according to Paluscio. "We don't do much sketch comedy," she said. "The performances we do just don't exist anywhere else."

She added that, since a lot of student compositions have been so amazing, they decided to expand it into a show. "We always perform a set of running commercials throughout the show promoting fake items. This year, it's finding new ways to use Jell-O. We aim to deliver sheer joy that lasts for hours. We all need some of that," she said.

Paluscio started Mouthworks! seven years ago as an offshoot from a class project in her Oral Interpretation course. Students were asked to read and recite information that was not intended to be performed -- for example, a menu, bus schedule or VCR instructions. "When they first performed it in public, they were a smash," she recalled.

"Jello Baby" is PG-rated. Free coffee and baked goods will be served.
