MCCC Students to Cook for TV Chef Lidia Bastianich of PBS's "Lidia’s Italy"
at the Trenton War Memorial Nov. 6

11/1/11

West Windsor, NJ:   Television chef Lidia Bastianich of "Lidia's Italy" on PBS will demonstrate recipes from her new cookbook at the Trenton War Memorial, with culinary assistance from Mercer County Community College culinary students, on Sunday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m.

Lidia will entertain with a four-course Italian cooking demonstration, including stuffed artichokes, rigatoni boscaiolo, chicken sorrentino and zuppa inglese.  Four lucky members from the audience will be invited on stage to share Lidia’s table and taste the food.

Mercer’s students are learning their culinary skills at the Career Training Institute (CTI) at the James Kerney Campus, and in associate degree culinary programs. The students will cook for about 75 people at an invitaton-only reception prior to the main event, and will prepare all of the food for Lidia’s on-stage presentation. They will also assist her on stage.

Executive Chef/Instructor Jorge Maldonado of MCCC's Career Training Institute.

Students of Mercer’s CTI, under the guidance of MCCC Executive Chef/Culinary Instructor Jorge Maldonado, have been practicing their skills using Lidia’s recipes.  “We already started preparing the dishes so students would learn how to do them,” Maldonado said.  He added that the students are excited to be working with the famous chef.  They will meet with Lidia’s sous chef, Cody Hogan, on Friday, Nov. 4, to receive more guidance on preparing for the event.

Sam Amico of Trenton’s historid DeLorenzo's Tomato Pies will kick off the event with a cooking demonstration.  There will also be a raffle for a Lidia pasta basket including her sauces and pasta cuts, as well as a grand Lidia basket that will include signed copies of all seven of her cookbooks and her children’s book.  Doors open at 5 p.m. and the show starts at 7 p.m.
