Artist Arlene Milgram to Present Gallery Talk Oct. 30

WEST WINDSOR, N.J. -- On Monday, October 30, at 7 p.m., Arlene Gale Milgram, a much-respected regional artist and art instructor, will discuss her work, process, and life as an artist during a free talk at The Gallery of Mercer County Community College. The talk is being offered in conjunction with her solo retrospective, Breathing Stones, now on display at The Gallery through Nov. 9, 2006.

Milgram's show is the second of The Gallery's exhibits celebrating women artists this season, according to Gallery Director Tricia Fagan. "For the next two years, there is a national celebration going on to acknowledge key anniversaries for women in the arts, including the 30-year anniversary of the opening of Linda Nochlin and Ann Sutherland Harris' exhibition, Women Artists: 1550-1950." She adds, "We're participating through a series of exhibits showcasing some of the truly outstanding women artists in this region, culminating with a group exhibition, Dangerous Women Two, in the spring."

Arlene Gale Milgram received her BFA at Tyler School of Art and continued her work at Penn State University. She has shown her art extensively in solo exhibitions as well as group shows throughout the tri-state area. Milgram, who is an art educator at the Montgomery Lower Middle School in Skillman, NJ, was recently the recipient of a Dodge Foundation Artist/Teacher Fellowship.

The current exhibit spans Milgram's work from the late 1960s to the present. Fagan says, "With nuanced mark-making in media from encaustic to wood and graphite, Arlene has been able to mine her personal internal landscape for work that is generous, layered, and exciting. Her work is genuinely beautifu; it has an emotional and psychological resonance. You find yourself engaged in a weighty dialogue before you realize it's happening, and you're better for it."

Hours for the exhibit are Mondays, 9 to 11 a.m. and 5 to 7 p.m., Tuesdays, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Wednesdays, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. The Gallery at Mercer County Community College is located on the second floor of the Communications Building, at 1200 Old Trenton Road, West Windsor.
