MCCC aviation team wins first place at regionals

WEST WINDSOR -- Pitting their skills in the air and on the ground against four-year and two- year colleges, Mercer County Community College's Flight Team was the overall winner of the Intercolle giate Flying Association's regional competition in October, scoring 262 points to the second-place team's 176 points.

Mercer students Colin Stewart, team captain, and Ian Johansen were the top two scoring male contestants, while the top scoring female was Mercer's Tabatha Ialacci, team captain. The team also won several trophies, including Navigation, Short Field Approach and Landing, and Message Drop.

Mercer's Flight Team won the last four out of four regional competitions under the leadership of teaching assistant and adviser Diane Loving of Bordentown. They have qualified for the nationals every year for the past 19 years, and have competed in 16 of those national competitions.

Mercer's Aviation Flight Technology program attracts students from throughout the state and region. The college owns a fleet of airplanes housed at the Trenton-Mercer Airport in Ewing.
