The MCCC Flight Club Walkathon 2006

April 28, 1 p.m. at Mercer County Park

In October 2005 the National Intercollegiate Flight Association’s Safety Competition was held for the northeast region.  The competitors were Bridgewater State College of Bridgewater, Mass., Daniel Webster of Nashua, New Hampshire, Schenectady Community College of Schenectady, New York and Mercer County Community College of West Windsor, New Jersey.  Scores were based on overall points earned from events such as accuracy landings, navigation, aircraft recognition, pre-flight and flight simulation.

For the second year in a row, the Mercer County Flight Team scored high and won 1st place!  As a result, they were invited to the national competition at Ohio State University this spring where the best teams from other regions of the country will compete.  “The competition emphasizes safety,” said Diane Loving, event coordinator and teaching assistant in Mercer’s Aviation program.  “Judges observe the entire competition, how we work with the planes and safety in handling the planes, as well as the communication coordination of the team members.”

MCCC’s Flight Team members included Jacob Copeland of Wrightstown, NJ, Evan Conoly of Langhorne, PA, Benjamin Shamy of Somerset, NJ, Michael Scuderi of Glen Rock, NJ, Sean Day of Burlington, NJ, Michael Clark of Passaic, NJ, Luis Nazario of Perth Amboy, NJ, Robert Blair of Edison, NJ and Dean Tzitzis of Fords, NJ.

Mercer will be competing against 29 other colleges this spring.  They are one of the smallest colleges attending this competition.  However, this year’s flight team will strive to score the first points ever for Mercer.  This is a great challenge for the Flight Team because they are competing against bigger, better-funded schools that have the opportunity to fly every day.  Perhaps this year, nine young inspiring aviators from a small county college in Jersey can shock the National Intercollegiate Flying Association with a strong performance.

To help raise money for the national competition in Ohio, members of the Flight Club have stepped up and will hold a fundraiser Walk-athon on April 28, 2006.  We will be walking three miles at Mercer County Park starting at 1 p.m.  Any donations you may give are certainly appreciated and will be extremely helpful to our program.  Any additional funds we may have left over will go for the Flight Team this fall.

We sincerely thank you for your support.
