Bound Students Conduct Science Research at Princeton University
This summer, 20 students from MCCC's Youth College participated in the
Princeton University Materials Academy (PUMA), a three-week science enrichment
program targeted for underrepresented high school students in Trenton
and surrounding districts. The program is made possible via federally-funded
Upward Bound, which prepares economically disadvantaged Trenton students
for college and career opportunities.
Through hands-on, inquiry-based activities, Youth College students examined
advancements in cancer research, nano-technology, materials science and
water filtration with researchers from the Princeton Center for Complex
Materials, and attended lectures on campus.
"The goal is to expose these youngsters to various facets of science,
math and technology," said Donald Davis, director of Mercer's Youth
College program at the James Kerney Campus. "They were very excited
about what they learned. PUMA is helping to increase the numbers of at-risk
students who consider science as a career field." Photos here.
