Scott Loh Appointed Director of Fire Academy
Scott Loh of Hamilton has been appointed director of the Mercer County Fire Academy, which is now under the supervision of MCCC through a new agreement with the County. He assumed his duties on July 16 at the Dempster Fire Service Training Center in Lawrence Township.
Loh has been active in the fire and emergency services community in Mercer County for many years in both volunteer and professional roles. More here

New MCCC Program -- Direct Health Care Provider
A new noncredit program at Mercer, "Direct Health Care Provider," will prepare participants in one semester for jobs in the health care field. According to Linda Martin, director of Mercer's Nursing Education program, the state-approved curriculum will ready students for the certification exam as either a Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) or Home Health Aide (H.H.A.).
MCCC will partner with Lawrenceville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, which will serve as the clinical site for hands-on training. More here

Dodge Foundation Grants Funds for "Dangerous Women Two"
The Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation has awarded a $7,500 grant to the Gallery at MCCC for the upcoming exhibit entitled "Dangerous Women Two." According to Dodge Foundation President and CEO David Grant, the grant was awarded in recognition of the Gallery's "significant contribution to the artistic vitality of our state."

The exhibit is scheduled to open Sept. 4 and continue through Oct. 5, with an opening reception on Sept. 8. It will showcase the works of 69 female artists from New Jersey, New York City, Bucks County and Philadelphia.

Vecchiolla Named Men's Tennis Coach
Marc J. Vecchiolla has been named head coach for men's tennis at MCCC. He established the women's program 10 years ago and they have excelled -- winning the NJCAA national title four times and placing second three times.
Additionally, Vecchiolla has assisted with the men's team under recently retired head coach Stan Dlugosz, traveling to the national tournament with the Vikings the past two years. More here

Latina Women's Council and MCCC Foundation Provide Scholarships
The Latina Women's Council of Mercer County has provided $5,000 to MCCC for Latino student scholarships. The college's Foundation Board has matched the grant, enabling ten students who will attend MCCC to receive $1,000 each. The students were honored at a reception on July 17 at the Conference Center, with County Executive Brian Hughes addressing the students and families. Nilda Garcia, Latina Women's Council president, presented certificates to the students and read sections from their application essays. More here

Kristen Callahan Explores New Ways to Teach Technology
Kristen Callahan was selected to be a “Think Forward Thought Leader” with Course Technology, a company that educates people about technology, identified as "an essential life skill." Callahan said, "As technology continues to evolve, its ubiquitous nature requires changes to the way technology is taught and learned. To continue to create leading edge solutions, as well as develop new solutions that keep pace with our ever changing digital world, I was asked to work in partnership with innovative people across the country to explore effective ways to teach technology."

Callahan met with instructors, students, industry experts, and academic leaders at a kick-off meeting in Boston on July 12 and 13. The group shared ideas and resources and reviewed recent survey data. "I am honored to be selected to be part of this group. As we develop next generation solutions, it’s vital that we have input," she said.

Flight Team Part of Historic Aviation Event
The MCCC Flight Team will operate a concession stand at the "Wings of Freedom Tour," sponsored by The Collings Foundation at the Trenton-Mercer Airport from Aug 17-20. This is part of the group's nationwide tour. Their website states: "The Wings of Freedom Tour brings historic aviation to your community! Tour through the authentically restored aircraft or take a flight aboard for the ultimate immersion in history!"

On display will be the North American B25 Mitchell Bomber (one of 30 remaining), Boeing B17 Flying Fortress Bomber (one of 12 remaining out of about 12,000 built), B24 Liberator Bomber (one of 3 remaining out of about 18,000 built). Walk-thru tours are $10 for adults and $5 for children 12 and under. Mercer's Flight Team will offer refreshments on Saturday, Aug. 18, and Sunday, Aug. 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Pre-arranged flights are available for a fee of $425/person on the B17 or B24 and $325 - $400 for the B25. Reservations are required. Call 1-800-568-8924. For more about the event, visit the website here or call 978-562-9182.

Camp College has discounted Great Adventure and Hurricane Harbor tickets for sale. Great Adventure Tickets are $26.50 and Hurricane Harbor tickets are $23.00. Please contact Trish Venanzi at ext. 3291.
