James Tolin Memorial Fund to Present "Jeffrey" June 22-24
Celebrate the 10th anniversary of the James Tolin Memorial Fund (JTMF) by going back to the show that started it all – Paul Rudnick’s “Jeffrey” at Kelsey Theatre. With a decade of productions behind it, the actors decided to recreate the very first show produced by the company. The tribute is fitting on several levels, as Tolin was a gay actor who was deeply involved with Kelsey Theatre. The memorial fund was created after he died of AIDS at age 37.

Proceeds from the performances benefit the Open Arms Foundation of Hillsborough, a support group network that was established at the medical offices where Tolin received treatment. With funding supplied by Open Arms, an educational Performing and Visual Arts project has been developed through Graffiti Productions, as well as a scholarship at MCCC. Details here.

Kathi Paluscio is "Simply Amazing"
For Kathi Paluscio, public speaking is not just a course she teaches: it’s a way of life. Her devotion to teaching the craft was recognized at Commencement ceremonies on May 24 when MCCC President Patricia Donohue presented her with the 2012 Distinguished Teaching Award. The recipient of the annual award is chosen by students, faculty and staff. In her introduction to the assembled students and guests, Dr. Donohue had many complimentary words to describe the associate professor of Communication. Among them were “down to earth,” “likeable,” “full of energy,” and “simply amazing.”

Among the awards Paluscio has been honored with during her time at Mercer is the Human Relations Award, as well as the Student Activities’ Woman of the Year Award. Full story here.

MCCC Pins 38 Nursing Graduates
Nursing program graduates celebrated in late May during a pinning ceremony to mark the beginning of their new career in nursing. Vice President Guy Generals thanked the graduates for deciding to pursue one of the most selfless careers.  “You should be commended for choosing this as a profession,” he said.   “Remember us and continue to strive.”

Jane Plunkett of Lawrenceville was the 2012 Nursing Valedictorian.  “This has been a challenging and exciting journey for all of us,” said Plunkett, who made a career change after 25 years in the financial services industry.  “We have supported each other through the demands of our studies and the demands of our lives, sharing in one another’s joys and sorrows.” This year 64 students earned Nursing degrees. Students Prepare for July Tour to South Africa
Thirteen MCCC students and four staff members, including President Patricia C. Donohue, are getting ready to pack their bags for a 15-hour flight to South Africa in July. The lengthy journey will be well worth it, say students, who discussed their reasons and expectations for their South African Study Tour during an orientation session on June 5. Led by Study Abroad Program Coordinator Andrea Lynch, the orientation included a "getting to know you" portion. "This will be the trip of a lifetime," said Gerri Benjamin, a Human Services student. "I hope to learn about the culture and relate it to my work." Full story here.
