Prof. Craig Coenen Speaks on NFL Tonight at Lawrence Library
Impress and astound your friends with interesting football facts and anecdotes just in time for Super Bowl on Feb. 5. Dr. Craig Coenen presents “History of the NFL” at Lawrence Library tonight, Jan. 26, starting at 7 p.m. He is the author of "From Sandlots to the Super Bowl" and, in addition to his role as history professor at MCCC, is a devoted football fan! Lawrence Library is located at 2751 Brunswick Pike (Business Route One) in Lawrenceville. Registration is suggested. Call 609-989-6920 or email lawprogs@mcl.org.

Tribute to Legendary Basketball Coach Howie Landa
Legendary former men’s basketball coach, Howie Landa, will never be forgotten at Mercer. A committee chaired by former MCCC Athletics Director/Professor Emeritus Al Leister is organizing the Howie Landa Tribute. Plans include fundraising to inscribe his name on the gymnasium floor, and hosting a ceremony Sept. 15 to unveil the court in the gym, followed by dinner at the Conference Center. The committee is searching for alumni and retirees, as well as long-time faculty and staff still at the college, to donate to the tribute and to attend the dinner to reunite with Landa, who will attend the event with his family. African American History Month Events Set [See details on all events here.)

    • Wed., Feb. 1: Opening Ceremonies, noon to 1 p.m., James Kerney Campus. Ray Broach, MCCC alumnus and the interim superintendent of the Trenton Public Schools, will present the keynote address. After the talk, all are invited to a luncheon of Southern style food in the JKC Center City Cafe prepared by Career Training Institute culinary students.
    • Sat., Feb. 4: "Celebration: Africans in America," 1 to 5 p.m., James Kerney Campus. Groups from African countries including Liberia, Kenya, Ghana, the Ivory Coast and South Africa will tell stories of their origins. An MCCC student dance troupe, Born Free, will provide entertainment. Cultural food and music will also be part of the festivities.
    • Tues., Feb. 7: "Think Pink Breast Cancer Awareness Night" at the WWC gym. The women's basketball game vs. Burlington begins at 5 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7 p.m. Both halftimes will feature a hoop shooting contest and a raffle drawing with prizes. Fans are asked to wear something pink. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for senior citizens, and free to students with their Mercer ID. Proceeds from admission will go to the Breast Cancer Resource Center.
    • Wed., Feb. 15: "State of the Black Man," noon to 1:30 p.m. A discussion will be presented in JKC's Kerney Hall, moderated by Terrance Carter, advisor for the JKC Student Activities Board.

    • The SGA Valentine's Day Fundraiser takes place Feb. 14 in SC104, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. We will be selling roses, carnations, and cupcakes, and rafflling three beautiful arrangements. Flyer here.
    • The Valentine's Event is set for Feb. 16 at 12 noon in the Conference Center with David Coleman, “The Dating Doctor,” a 13-time national Speaker of the Year and 2011 Entertainer of the Year! He has made over 2,500 appearances nationwide, speaking to more than two million people! He will be giving the group insight into how to make your relationships matter! Free lunch is provided. Fitness and Wellness: Free Classes to Resume Next Week
Zumba and Yoga classes are FREE to students, staff and faculty. For yoga, wear comfortable clothing, bring a yoga mat, water, (and a blanket if you get cold during the meditation cool down). If you have any questions contact Danielle at ext. 3412 or e-mail garrubad@mccc.edu.

    • Wednesday afternoon yoga begins Wed., Feb. 1 and runs until April 25, 12 noon in the gym.
    • Evening yoga classes are held EVERY Monday and Thursday evening throughout the Spring semester, beginning Monday, Feb. 6 and running until April 30, 5:30 - 6:30 p.m. in FA129.
    • ZUMBA fitness classes run EVERY Tuesday and Thursday, Feb. 9 through April 26 in FA129 at 12 noon.
    • Healthy Haven with Sally Jones meets Feb. 20, March 5, April 2 and 30, and May 7 from 12 to 1 p.m. in SC211. Get tips for healthy living, stress management and relaxation! Free lunch! Flyer here.

MCCC Selected to Host College Goal Sunday 2012
From Diane Campbell: We need volunteers to help us get the word out to help low-income families and first generation students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). College Goal Sunday will take place at MCCC and nine other locations throughout the state on Sun., Feb. 26. Our event will be at the James Kerney Campus at 1 p.m. A snow date is set for Sun., March 4. If you are willing to help, register at njcollegegoalsunday.org to volunteer at the site of your choice. Encourage others to volunteer for this event! Also help us spread the word to students! Learn Real World Business Applications
Those looking to stand out in today's competitive business environment will want to sign up for business courses offered through Mercer’s Center for Continuing Studies (CCS) this winter and spring. Highlights include the "Adaptive Lean Six Sigma Green Belt" course, which teaches efficiency in the workplace, or "Project Management Professional (PMP) Certification Prep and Review." MCCC Offers Training for Contractors
New Jersey contractors are invited to register for the EPA Model Renovator Certification training offered at MCCC on March 13. Subsidized by the NJ Department of Community Affairs, the training covers lead remediation, repair and painting, and NJ rules and regulations. More here.

Feb. 11: Youth College Director Don Davis will be Honored by the Akoma House Initiative with an Akoma Wings award at the Artworks Gallery in Trenton from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will feature dance, spoken word and music. January Datatel: Project NASA Update
From Susan Bowen: We have liftoff!  The Datatel implementation is underway and we are pleased to report the progress we have made on this initiative. The Project NASA Teams have been meeting on a regular basis. Team members have all participated in a Project Management 101 seminar, developed norms for the implementation team, and created a charter for each project team. Consulting sessions have begun for the Core, Portal, Finance, Recruitment and Admissions teams. A monthly update on Project NASA will be provided in the M-Newsletter. We printed extra copies of the Winter 2012 Viking because we want to give them to as many of our students, alumni and friends as possible. Nursing Hosts Pinning for 26 Grads
On Jan. 18 the Nursing Program hosted a pinning ceremony for 26 new graduates at Kelsey Theatre. Director of Nursing Madeline Gervase presided. It was a very excited group who received their degrees. Class valedictorian was Vi Hoang, who thanked her husband for helping her through the difficult course work. She has two young children.

Lotus Notes Instructor Needed
The Center for Training and Development is seeking an instructor for Lotus Notes 8.5 databases. Must have extensive knowledge of the program, and the ability to create, modify, enhance, organize, and search database documents. Part-time day hours. Classroom training experience required.
