WEST WINDSOR – The National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) All-Region 19 and All-Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) Division II softball team rosters look a lot like the opening day lineup for Mercer County Community College (MCCC), with six of the team’s 14 players scoring post-season honors.

“We were fortunate to have a talented veteran core that was eager to work with incoming freshmen to create a dynamic, hard-working team,” said Head Coach Ryan Zegarski. “Their hard work, leadership, and individual accomplishments have become a model for future players.”

Among those scoring First-Team All-Region 19 honors was pitcher Kaley Wise, a Steinert High School graduate, who was named the Region 19 Pitcher of the Year. In her sophomore year, Wise ranked 21st in the nation in wins with 16, with 17 complete games and five shutouts. She ranked 13th in the nation with 159 strikeouts and 10th with a 1.54 ERA.

At the plate, Wise hit .309 and slugged .515, with four home runs and 22 RBI in 68 plate appearances.

“You could always depend on Kaley for the big play, be it on the hill or at the plate,” Zegarski said.

Joining Wise on the All-Region 19 First Team was catcher Gabi Earley, who hit .416 and slugged .730 with nine home runs and 52 RBI in 46 games. Infielder Sophia Beretski also made the first team with her .424 batting average, 64 hits – 14 for extra bases – and 30 RBI over 45 games.

Joining them on the All-Region 19 Second Team is infielder Alisha Patel, who hit .403 and scored 38 runs, and designated player Tatum Marshall, who hit .346 and slugged .647 with nine homers.

All five were named to the All-GSAC Team. Joining them is Vikings infielder Harley Gowdy, who hit .323 and slugged .409, scoring 27 runs and driving in 21 over 43 games. Six of the 11 players named to the All-GSAC Team were Vikings.

“Mercer has a proud history of producing hard-working competitors, be it on the field or in the classroom,” Zegarski said. “I am proud of the accomplishments of this team, and pleased these players are getting the recognition they deserve.”

The Vikings softball team concluded the season with a 37-6-1 record, claiming both the Region 19 and the District K championships. The team earned a berth to the 2018 NJCAA Softball World Series, the first since 2010.
