Men’s Tennis Heads to Regional Tournament After Second Place Finish in Regular Season

4/30/18

James Bueno at no. 3 singles is undefeated going into the tournament.

The third doubles team of Noah Reyes, left, and Greg Del Favoro enters the Region 19 tournament undefeated. Reyes is also undefeated in singles play.

West Windsor, N.J. – The ball has been bouncing the Vikings’ way this season. The Mercer County Community College (MCCC) men’s tennis team finishes the regular season with a record of 8-2. The Vikings head into the Region 19 Tournament in second place behind Rowan College at Gloucester County.

Several players have delivered in a big way. No. 3 singles player James Bueno and no. 6 Noah Reyes, along with the no. 3 doubles team of Greg Del Favero and Noah Reyes, are undefeated in their flights.

Rowan and Brookdale Community College should provide the major competition during the three-day contest, according to MCCC Head Coach Marc Vecchiolla. “We have a traditional rivalry with these two teams,” he said. “We are looking forward to our home court advantage this weekend. We will be tracking down every ball, every point.”

The roster also includes Xavier Shuda (first singles); Seven McGlotten-Bonds (second singles); Del Favero (fourth singles); and Bennett Sherr (fifth singles). Other doubles teams are Shuda and Bueno (first doubles) and McGlotten-Bonds and Sherr (second doubles). Alternates are Shub Sharma and Aaron Burt.

With five returning sophomores, three of whom went to nationals in 2017, Vecchiolla predicts a competitive tournament. “These players want to take that trip back to nationals. I expect them to give it their best shot this weekend,” he said.

The tournament will be played May 4 to 6 at the Mercer County Park Tennis Center. The top three teams will travel to the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament in Peach Tree City, Ga., May 10 to 13.
