WEST WINDSOR – As Mercer County Community College (MCCC) begins the inaugural practice season for the new men’s lacrosse team, the coaching staff has been expanded with the addition of a veteran high school coach.

Matt Serfass, who has spent the past seven years as an assistant coach at Hopewell Valley High School, has been announced as MCCC’s first ever men’s lacrosse assistant coach and defensive coordinator. At Hopewell Valley, Serfass was a part of a coaching staff that claimed two county and four conference championships. In 2015, he was named the Mercer County Assistant Boys Lacrosse Coach of the Year.

“We are very excited to welcome Matt Serfass to the Mercer men’s lacrosse program,” said MCCC men’s lacrosse head coach Rob Siris. “His character and leadership skills will be a tremendous asset for the team. We are confident that his experience as a math teacher, lacrosse coach, and as a former collegiate student athlete will help guide our men to focus on academics first, and then athletics.”

Serfass also has ten years of football coaching experience at both Hopewell Valley and Council Rock High School. He graduated from Shippensburg University in 2000, where he was a starting linebacker for the football team, and received his master’s degree in education from Holy Family University in 2003. He has taught math at Timberlane Middle School in Pennington since 2008.

Meanwhile, the past few months have been extremely busy for the MCCC men’s lacrosse team. Siris said that nearly 20 current Mercer students recently began spring practice for the 2018 practice-only season, with the coaching staff now focusing on the recruitment of high school players. He anticipates a roster of 25-30 players for fall 2018, when the team will prepare for a full National Junior College Athletic Association Region 19 schedule for spring 2019.

“There is a tremendous wealth of experienced lacrosse players on the Mercer campus, and that gives us a great foundation on which to build,” Siris said. “We have already seen a lot of interest from graduating high school players, and we look forward to fielding a competitive team next spring.”

Current or prospective students interested in playing men's lacrosse at Mercer should fill out the online recruiting form and also follow Mercer Men's Lacrosse @MercerMLAX on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram. For more information, contact Coach Siris at sirisr@mccc.edu or call the MCCC Athletics Office at (609) 570-3742.
