West Windsor, N.J. – This spring, students, staff, family members and friends dug deep into their pockets as Mercer County Community College (MCCC) once again raised funds to benefit Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Over 200 students and staff members, either as part of group teams or as individuals, passed around their jars to collect coins -- and bills -- for this national organization that fights childhood cancer. This annual MCCC fundraiser, which began in 2014, is hosted by the Student Life and Leadership office and the Student Government Association.

Over the course of four weeks, "Penny Wars V" teams had raised close to $2,500 college-wide.This year’s overall winning team was the Hospitality Club; the winner in the Large Group Category was the Drama Club. The small group winner was the Development and Alumni Relations Department and the individual winner was student Bonnie Koury.

According to Student Life and Leadership staff member Denise Salvatore, the level of friendly competition was robust. There were 18 teams of 10-plus members, three groups of 2 to 9, and four individuals who entered the contest.

Over the past five years, the project has raised more than $8,000 for Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation.

Said Salvatore, "This project has become one that everyone at Mercer rallies around -- certainly our students on both campuses, but also our staff and faculty. This couldn't be a better lesson for our students about teamwork and service for a worthy cause."
