West Windsor, N.J. – As part of a festive multicultural evening at the MCCC Conference Center April 26, Mercer County Community College’s (MCCC’s) Kappa Iota Chapter of the Alpha Mu Gamma (AMG) Foreign Language Honor Society formally inducted 21 new students into its fold.

Celebrating its 34th anniversary this year, the chapter gave each new member the opportunity to present personal remarks in their chosen language of study and sign their names in the membership book.

Presiding over the ceremony were students Nancy King, chapter president, and Mikayla Cifrese, vice president, along with Program Coordinator Daniel D’Arpa. (Faculty member Steven Richman was unable to attend.)

This year’s inductees for full membership are: Ayesha Rahman (Spanish), Lauren Fredrick (ASL), Logan Pasternak (French), Michael Spikofsky (Spanish), Abigail Grijalva (Spanish), Anthony Berg (Spanish), Max Gatto (Spanish), Martin Prokai (German), and Juan Carlos Albarracin (Japanese). Inducted as associate members were: Onyinye Nnajiofor (Spanish), Kayla Andrade (ASL), Alexander Muller (Japanese), Eric Weiss (French), Richard Hood (German), Hannah Gulick (ASL), Jaqueline Mann (Spanish), Karolina Trybula (Spanish), Alexis Stolberg (German), Gregory Patten (Japanese), Emily Vasquez (German) and Daria Guler (ASL). Additional language courses offered at Mercer include Italian, Arabic, Latin and Chinese.

“These honorees are among our most eager students seeking to communicate in our global society,” D’Arpa said. “They thrive and excel in small, student-centered classrooms.  Their membership in Alpha Mu Gamma represents their facility and affinity for the study of foreign languages.”

Alpha Mu Gamma was established at Los Angeles City College in 19031 and has grown to include more than 300 college chapters across the country.

Following the cermeony, students and family members joined for a multicultural dinner buffet and live music.

The Kappa Iota Chapter of AMG upholds the society’s goals to recognize achievement in foreign language study, nurture interest in the study of foreign languages, and foster greater understanding of others through languages.  Inductees must have an overall grade point average of at least a 3.2 while achieving a grade of at least an A- in two successive courses of the same language.
