AAWCC-Mercer and Health & Safety Committee to Host Heart Month Activities in February

2/2/18

AAWCC celebrates Heart Health Month in February. Proceeds of fundraising activities will be donated to the American Heart Assocation.

Among the AAWCC members organizing the February events are, from left, Erin Cahill-Wetzel, Stacy Denton and Roseann Cooper.

West Windsor, N.J. – There will be lots more going on in February at Mercer County Community College (MCCC) than hearts and flowers on Valentine’s Day. Mercer’s chapter of the American Association for Women in Community Colleges (AAWCC) and MCCC's Health & Safety Committee will host a variety of activities focused on heart health.

The group will host two month-long fundraisers, with proceeds to be donated to the American Heart Association. Starting on Feb. 1, AAWCC will sell paper hearts for $1 for its “Have a Heart, Buy a Heart” campaign. Hearts will be available for purchase during lunches in the Student Center, as well as from AAWCC members. The Student Government Association and Student Executive Council at the James Kerney Campus will also be selling hearts.

On Feb. 2, the Mercer family is asked to pull out their red scarves, sweaters and shirts as the college observes National Women’s Heart Health Day. AAWCC members will sell Red Dress Pins for $1 in the Student Center on the West Windsor Campus, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Feb. 14, AAWCC again asks Mercer folks to pull out their favorite red attire as the college celebrates “Wear Red for Heart Health Day,” while also celebrating Valentine’s Day. A group photo of everyone in red will be taken at noon on the Kelsey Theatre stage. Red Dress Pins will be available for purchase in the Student Center, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

On Feb. 16, participants can turn their attention to the kitchen, as Chef Doug Fee, Coordinator of the HRIM program, presents “Healthy Eating, Healthy Menus” in ES110 from noon to 1 p.m. Professor Fee will talk about recipe development, lifestyle and diet, as well as portion control, and share methodologies that make food preparation quicker, easier -- and healthier! Some samples will be served (although it will not be lunch). The program is limited to 40 participants, so register soon by calling  609-570-3202 or cooperr@mccc.edu. The community is invited, space permitting.

On Feb. 25, World Instructor Training Schools and the American Heart Association present a free CPR training event from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. in the gym on the West Windsor Campus. (Note that this training is not a certification program.) The Student Nurses Association will be on hand to take blood pressures. Healthy snacks and heart health liteature will also be available. Sign-in begins at 5 p.m. This session is open to the public. Register here.
