Women’s Tennis Team Announces 2017 Schedule; Opening Home Match Is Sept. 12

7/28/17

Marc Vecchiolla begins his 21st season as head coach for women's tennis. He was the recipient of the 2017 Herschel Stephens Coaching Award.

West Windsor, N.J. – Mercer County Community College's MCCC's) women’s tennis team has announced its 2017 schedule. The Vikings open the season on Thursday, Sept. 7 with a match at Camden County College. Their home opener is on Tuesday, Sept. 12 vs. Brookdale Community College, starting at 3:30 p.m.

The Vikings have seven home matches this fall. (Home matches are played at the Tennis Center at Mercer County Park.) They will host last year’s Region 19 champion, Camden, on Monday, Sept. 18 and host Region 19 runner-up Ocean County College on Friday, Sept. 15. Other home matches include Bucks County Community College on Thursday, Sept. 14; Rowan College at Gloucester County on Friday, Sept. 26; Lackawanna College on Tuesday, Sept. 26; and Northampton Community College on Friday, Sept. 29. The Vikings final regular season match is on Monday, Oct. 2, when they travel to Rowan at Gloucester.

Ocean County College will host the Region 19 Tournament Oct. 6 to 8. The top three teams at the championship will qualify for the Division III National Championship, which takes place in Peach Tree City, Ga., Oct. 17 to 21.

Last season, the Vikings finished 4-5. But a strong performance at the Region 19 Tournament, when the Vikings tied for third place with Northampton, provides lots of reasons for optimism this year. (The tiebreaker is based on wins in finals matches, which went to Northampton in 2016.) Mercer ended their 2016 season just shy of qualifying for the National Championship and expects to return several freshmen from last year's squad.

Marc Vecchiolla begins his 21st season as the head coach for women’s tennis. He is assisted by Ralph Bencivengo and Barb Pleva.
