Men's Soccer Team Wins Region 19 Title, Advances to District Tournament Nov. 4-5

West Windsor, N.J. – The Mercer County Community College (MCCC) men’s soccer team is back where it wants to be -- Region 19 champs. The Vikings captured the Region 19 title with a 3-1 win over Essex County College Oct. 28 at The Proving Grounds in Conshohocken, Pa.

As the no. 3 seed, the Vikings have enjoyed two upset wins in the post-season -- first versus Harcum, the no. 2 seed, on Oct. 21, and then against the no.1-seeded Wolverines in the final.

The game remained scoreless until 7 minutes before the half, when Jonas Castelhano Da Silva found the net to give the Vikings a 1-0 lead heading into halftime. With 23 minutes left in the second half, Oshana Boothe put the Vikings up 2-1 and Jonathan Ward added another goal with 18 minutes left. Kotaro Okada assisted on both goals in the second half. 

Emiliano Fama was named the Defensive MVP of the Tournament and Eiichi Yamaguchi was named the Offensive MVP of the Tournament.

With the win, the Vikings will travel to the Northeast District Championship this weekend, November 4-5, at Monroe Community College (Rochester). Mercer will face Massasoit in its opening game on Saturday. If they win, they will earn a bid to the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Men’s Soccer National Tournament. (The Northeast District is receiving two bids to the national tournament this year.)

The other game to be played on Saturday is Monroe (Rochester) vs. Monroe (Bronx), The winner of the four-team tournamnet will earn the District title, as well as a higher seed for the national tournament.

With a 17-3-1 record, the Vikings are currently ranked 15th in the country. 

The Vikings are coached by Widmarc Dalce, with assistant coaches Haris Abawi, Milton Suah and John Pietrowski.
