West Windsor, N.J. – Following the devastation of Hurricane Harvey in Texas in August, the Mercer County Community College (MCCC) Athletics Department quickly took action.

The department galvanized student ahtletes and their fans to contribute to a week-long clothing drive to assist hurricane victims.

According to Erin Cahill-Wetzel, the department's administrative specialist who helped organize the drive, the response was nothing short of overwhelming. "We got so many contributions from our athletes and staff members around the college that we actually collected more than we could send to Texas," she said.

The department packed up three boxes of Mercer athletic gear and shipped them off to Texas. The next step was finding a local organization that could benefit from the overflow.

This week the Rescue Mission of Trenton will receive nine boxes of clothing to distribute to those in need. The Rescue Mission of Trenton is a non-profit organization that helps those less fortunate in the community.

Cahill-Wetzel notes that members of the women's soccer team were major supporters of the project and cotributed generously to the drive. "Every member of the team brought in at least one bag of clothing. We were blown away by their generosity. It’s a credit to Coach [Elyse] Diamond in gettting the word out to her team, Their generosity is much appreciated. Not only were we able to help those affected by the hurricane in Texas, but we collected enough to help those in need in Mercer County.”
