Men’s Tennis Alumnus Brandon Davis Excels on Court at Rutgers-Newark

5/2/17

MCCC alumnus Brandon Davis ('16) had a stellar spring with Rutgers-Newark men's tennis, helping the team to its best record in more than ten years.

West Windsor, N.J. -- Thje 2016 men's tennis season at Mercer County Community College was a very special one. After a decisive win in the Region 19 championship, the team competed at the NJCAA Division III National Championship in Plano, Tex., finishing in second place on the national stage, the highest finish ever for the program.

One reason for the Vikings' tremendous success was 2nd singles player Brandon Davis, who capped off his 2016 season with a national title at 1st doubles (with partner Andres Jacome), and NJCAA All-American Honors. (While at Mercer, Davis was the Region 19 champion at 1st singles in 2015 and at 2nd singles in 2016.)

Davis has brought his winning ways to the courts at Rutgers-Newark this year, where he transferred after graduating from MCCC with an associate degree in Criminal Justice.

During his spring season with the Scarlet Knights,  Davis played 1st singles and 1st doubles and was 9-2 in both flights. Overall, the team was 7-2 in spring season matches and headed into the Great Northeast Athletic Conference following an 8-1 win over Rutgers-Camden. The Scarlet Knights' season came to an end in the semifinals after falling to no. 1-seeded Ramapo College April 29.

Rutgers-Newark ends its year 8-8, its best record in more than 10 years.

MCCC Men’s Tennis Coach Marc Vecchiolla has nothing but high praise for his former All-American. “Brandon is the consummate team player. He always put team goals before his individual goals. He was our best player in the region in 2015, yet in 2016, he accepted his new role as team captain and no. 2 singles player on the team with grace and determination. I am proud to have coached such a high quality individual and expect to hear wonderful stories about Brandon for years to come.”
