Special Guests to Help Commemorate Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education May 16
May 17 will mark the 63rd anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education, the landmark decision that desegregated public schools in the United States. On Tuesday, May 16, starting at 6 p.m. in Kerney Hall at the James Kerney Campus, Dr. Thelma Napoleon Smith will tell her family’s story in their fight to end segregation at Trenton’s Hedgepeth Williams School. Their legal fight became the test case for the famous Brown case 10 years later. (The Hedgepeth Williams story is the subject of an upcoming book now in publication.) In addition, Dr. Myron Orfield, director of the Institute for Metropolitan Opportunity, will provide new data and analysis and discuss the intricate legal aspects of Brown v. Board. A discussion about the current state of the issues of race and class will form the basis of this community conversation. In addition, featured at the new JKC Gallery is the photo exhibit by Wendel White, “Schools for the Colored,” which attendees will be encouraged to view as they consider society’s progress over the last 63 years. (The show has closed, but will reopen for the event.) For more information, contact Diane Campbell at campbeld@mccc.edu or Monica Weaver at weaverm@mccc.edu.This is a cooperative program between MCCC and Building One New Jersey.
