TRENTON – Mercer County Community College (MCCC) will be moving forward in Trenton, with a celebration on Wednesday, April 12 featuring a ribbon cutting for a new building on the James Kerney Campus (JKC) at 137 North Broad Street.
The Trenton Hall Annex features state-of-the-art technology, with classrooms to provide instruction for the new Security Systems Technology and Cyber Security programs, as well as new space for existing programs for Certified Nurse Assistant, Phlebotomy, and EKG (electrocardiogram) Technician prep.
The community is invited to the event, which begins at 11:30 a.m. with “The Moving Forward Bus Tour,” sponsored by Greater Trenton. The bus tour leaves from Trenton Hall, with stops at Thomas Edison State University’s Glen Cairns Hall, Roebling Lofts, and the New Jersey Realtors Headquarters. The bus then returns to JKC for the ribbon cutting ceremony.
“We look forward to welcoming the community to our new facility and to promote higher education opportunities in the City of Trenton,” said MCCC President Dr. Jianping Wang.
In addition to teaching facilities, the Trenton Hall Annex features a new art gallery, community meeting space and a courtyard on the ground floor. At 1 p.m. Professor Emeriti Mel Leipzig will present the college with his original painting “Fashion Design, MCCC Trenton Campus,” which will be displayed on the building’s first floor. Leipzig will deliver an artist’s talk at 4 p.m.
Other highlights of the afternoon include a tour of Trenton Hall and the Trenton Hall Annex at 1:15 p.m., and the opening of a new exhibit at the JKC Gallery from 5 to 8 p.m. featuring award-winning photographer Wendel White’s “Schools for the Colored,” with an artist’s talk to start at approximately 5:45 p.m.
Total cost for the construction of the 8,500-square-foot Trenton Hall Annex is $5.9 million, which includes demolition of the building previously on the site and renovations to the adjacent Trenton Hall. Funding for the project was made possible by the Building Our Future Bond Act, passed by voters in 2012.
