West Windsor, N.J. – Mercer County Community College (MCCC) will host a Fall Blood Drive on Wednesday, Sept. 20 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Student Center on the West Windsor Campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road. The Community Blood Council of New Jersey will bring its team of certified phlebotomists to the campus to carry out the drive.

All donors will receive free drinks, snacks, and tee shirt. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 609-570-3387 or click here.  More information is also available at www.GiveBloodnj.org.

According to MCCC faculty member Lisa Shave, coordinator of the Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT) program, the event has a dual purpose. “We are gratified to support the work of the Community Blood Council by adding to the blood supply in our state. At the same time, our MLT students will engage in an important learning experience.”

According to Shave, 16 MLT students will take a lead role in recruiting donors, distributing the medication deferral list, and staffing the refreshment table. Some will donate blood.

"This drive will provide a hands-on way for students to assist on the front lines, be part of this important work, and understand the key role of community donors,” she said.

Shave notes that the drive is a valuable supplement to the "Blood Banking" course (MLT 207 - Clinical Immunohematology) her students are currently enrolled in. The course curriculum includes donor eligibility, collection, and the manufacturing of the different blood components.

MLT students will further enrich their classroom knowledge with a field trip to the Community Blood Council of New Jersey prior to hosting the MCCC drive.

The September blood drive is held in addition to the annual American Red Cross blood drive hosted by MCCC in partnership with Fulton Bank in late January, where MLT students will also provide assistance.
