10/4/17

In a strong anti-bullying statement, students joined with President Jianping Wang to hang the Day 1 "Upstanders to Bullying" banner in the Student Center.

With some 300 signatures collected since the start of the semester, SGA President Jenn Eng emphasized the college's commitment "to make people feel safe and included."

West Windsor, N.J. – Students at Mercer County Community College (MCCC) have made their stand against bullying. On Oct. 3, student leaders held a ceremony as they hung their “Upstanders to Bullying” banner in the Student Center.

In the five weeks since the start of the semester, the Day 1 anti-bullying banner was signed by approximately 300 students, faculty and staff. Many pledging to carry an upstanders card and assist those who are the target of bullying.

The Day 1 anti-bullying initiative was inspired by the Tyler Clementi Foundation and is the Student Government Association’s (SGA's) official theme for the fall semester.

In addressing the assembled group, SGA President Jenn Eng said, “We have committed ourselves to being upstanders. We have pledged to make people feel safe and included by treating others with respect and compassion. This is a wonderful show of solidarity for our campus."

MCCC President Jianping Wang attended the ceremony and thanked students for taking a stand. “ Your actions send a clear message that we must be respectful of others. We need to work together for what is just and right and fair. Bullying has zero place at this college,” she said.

Observed Denise Salvatore, a member of the Student Life and Leadership staff, “This message resonated with our students. We heard from many who have been the subject of bullying at some point. Students really got behind this project.”

As a kick-off to the campaign, students, faculty and staff were featured in a Day 1 Declaration video. View the video here.
