Call for Entries: “PlayFest 2017” Seeks Scripts from Those Who Live, Work or Study in Mercer County
West Windsor, N.J. – “PlayFest 2017,” a special event to be held as part of Mercer Country Community College’s (MCCC's) celebration of the arts during its 50th anniversary year, is seeking new plays to feature in performances that will take place March 10 to 12 at Kelsey Theatre. The theater is located on MCCC's West Windsor Campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.
Submissions of original work will be accepted through February 28 from those who live, work or study in Mercer County, or are part of the performing arts family at Kelsey Theatre. Categories include full-length and one-act plays, as well as musicals and plays with musical accompaniment.
According to festival chairman LouJ Stalsworth, “We are celebrating the tradition of community theater in Mercer County that continues to thrive, thanks in large part to the wonderful theater companies that continue to present outstanding, award-winning productions at Kelsey Theatre each year. In honor of that tradition, our goal is to present as many plays as possible,” he said.
Stalsworth notes that the productions themselves will be bare bones, using a fringe festival model. Staged readings, as well as more fully realized productions, will be considered. “Our focus will be on the written word, not production values. Load-in and load-out times will be limited, allowing for a maximum number of plays to be seen on stage,” he said.
Kelsey Theatre will make available a limited amount of generic set pieces and furniture, the use of which is not mandatory. The selected authors will be responsible for casting and rehearsing their plays.
Submissions to PlayFest should include the author’s name and contact information, title of the show, a synopsis, cast list, expected running time and the first 10 pages of dialogue. Music should be included in either .wav or Mpg3 format, plus a lyric sheet if required. Scripts should be emailed to PlayFest2017@mccc.edu.
Under the artistic direction of M. Kitty Getlk,
Kelsey Theatre celebrates its 45th season this year. It is the only New Jersey community theater located on a community college campus. In addition to 10 community companies that are based at Kelsey Theatre, the theater hosts performances by the MCCC Theatre/Dance program and Music program, presents a Kelsey Kids Series with traveling professional troupes, and is home to Tomato Patch Visual and Performing Arts Workshops, a summer theater program that draws approximately 600 young people from 5th through 12th grade.
The deadline for PlayFest submissions is Feb. 28. More information is available here or by emailing PlayFest2017@mccc.edu.
