Women’s Soccer Goalkeeper Shaunice Palms Racking Up Mid-Season Honors

West Windsor, N.J. – Mercer County Community College MCCC) women’s soccer goalkeeper Shaunice Palms earned two major honors this week. Palms, a freshman from Hamilton who graduated from Nottingham High School, was named the Garden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) Goalie of the Week for Sept. 18 to 24. Just a day later, she was named the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I Goalie of the Week for Sept. 19-25.
Palms has a total of eight shutouts on the season thus far. Last week, she recorded her sixth shutout, with six saves, in a 1-0 win over Essex County College on Sept. 21, followed by a 3-0 shutout win, with seven saves, over College of Southern Maryland on Sept. 24. Her most recent shutout came against Rowan College @ Burlington (five saves) on Sept. 28.
The Vikings are currently 9-1 and next face Harcum College away on Oct. 1. The team's next home game is against Community College of Rhode Island on Oct. 8 at noon.
In her 10 games in goal, Palms has 67 saves while allowing only 11 goals. She has an impressive .859 save percentage and 1.21 goals allowed average.
According to Head Coach Elyse Diamond, Palms, who first played goalie during her senior year of high school, is showing significant improvement with every practice and every game. “Shaunice has adapted well to the goalie position and is developing very quickly. She brings positive energy to the team and works hard at practice. It’s showing on the field in a big way.”
