Foundation course in photography emphasizes basic techniques for the still camera and darkroom. The development of creative visual expression is strongly encouraged. Students purchase a manually-controlled camera and other appropriate materials. 1 lecture/4 studio hours

PHO 103 - Digital Photography for Non-Majors (3 credits)
Introductory course for the student who has basic computer knowledge on Mac or PC platforms and is interested in gaining knowledge of introductory digital imaging tools and techniques. Topics include software, digital cameras, large-format inkjet printing, resolution, scanning, printing, QTVR, and book design. 2 lecture/3 laboratory hours

Historical survey of the growth of photographic art and technique from camera obscura to the present, emphasizing aesthetics, applications, and social impact. Includes the relationship of photography to the other arts and the effects of changing technology on the photographic image. Spring offering. 3 lecture hours

PHO 206 - Non-Silver Photography (3 credits)
Explores the methods of historical photographic printing through non-silver photographic methods. The non-silver printing techniques explored are Cyanotype, Van Dyke, and Gum Bichromate. Students learn to make duplicate negatives through traditional and digital techniques. 1 lecture/4 studio hours

Prerequisite: PHO102 with a minimum C grade or portfolio review
Students explore the mechanics and aesthetic potential of the large-format camera while shooting during class field trips, and enhance darkroom skills while working with large-format negatives. 4x5 field and rail cameras provided. 1 lecture/4 studio hours

Covers photographic activity used in police work, namely crime scene and evidence/enforcement documentation. Requires a manually-operated camera and portable electronic flash. 1 lecture/4 laboratory hours
PHO 251 - Photographic Journalism (3 credits)
Prerequisite: PHO 102 or PHO 203 with a minimum C grade
Emphasizes concepts and application of visual communication in conjunction with the printed word. Students are afforded opportunities to gain practical experience covering news and sports events for The College Voice and to work with journalism students. A photographic essay is developed throughout the semester. 1 lecture/4 studio hours
