The Center for Continuing Studies offers a wide variety of Personal Interest courses to assist in your personal growth and development. We have listed some of the courses below but, for more detailed information, please click on the links listed that will take you to the corresponding areas of the course catalog.
SWIM PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN:
MOMMY AND ME (Ages 6 months - 2 years) - BRAND NEW!
March 10 - May 19, 2016 (no class March 24), Thursdays, 10am,
NCSWM-CS017-01, $125 for adult & baby
Join us for a fun and interactive water experience for both baby and adult. This class has the primary goal of enabling babies to become familiar with water and wet faces.
Pre-School Swim Program (Ages 3 - 6)
Tuesdays: 9:15am, 10am, 1:45pm, March 8 - May 10, 2016
Wednesdays: 1pm, 1:45pm, March 9 - May 11, 2016
Thursdays: 9:15am, 10am, 1pm, 1:45pm, March 10 - May 19, 2016 (no class March 24)
This series of courses teaches preschoolers the swimming skills that could save their lives while then improving those skills to build them into competent swimmers. Each class meets for 45 minutes per week. Enrollment is limited. Preschoolers in this program learn to swim with their faces submerged. Parents are advised to observe the program prior to enrolling to make sure it is appropriate for their children. There are no refunds after class begins.
Saturday Swim Program (Ages 5 - 12)
March 5 - May 14, 2016, Saturdays, Time to be assigned, $120
Classes meet for 50 minutes on nine Saturdays between 8am and noon.
Saturday morning swim instruction for children ages 5 - 12 is offered throughout the year. Enrollment is limited. Registered students must attend an in-water screening session for assignment to the appropriate class level in the American Red Cross Progressive Swimming Sequence. Registration must be completed prior to the screening session. The screening session for our Spring Program is Saturdays, February 20, 10am-12pm. Parents will be notified of class assignments prior to the first class.

Lifeguard Training Update/Renewal (Ages 15+)
March 12 and 13, 2016, Saturday, 9am - 5pm, and Sunday, 10am - 5pm, $215
Is your certification about to expire or do you need the Lifeguard Today update? Then join us for this refresher course and be ready to work this summer! This course will include a CPR challenge. Student must attend both Saturday and Sunday sessions.
Lifeguard Training: An Interactive Course (Ages 15+)

This course includes first aid and CPR for the professional rescuer. Participants who successfully complete the pool and classroom sessions will receive American Red Cross Certification in Lifeguard Training. Students must attend all classes. To receive certification, the student must be able to swim 500 yards continuously, surface dive 9 feet to retrieve a brick and return it to the surface, surface dive 5 feet and swim underwater for 15 yards and tread water with hands out of the water for 2 minutes.

Navigating Your Digital Camera Purchase

If you are thinking of purchasing a digital camera or have purchased one and need a jump-start on understanding all that the camera can do, this class is for you! In three sessions, you will know what to look for while making a purchase while understanding the special features of the camera that will help you take better photos. Introduction to the Art of Digital and 35mm Photography

Learn about your camera while experimenting in creative photographic environments, including field labs. Learn about aperture and shutter settings, composition lenses (zoom, wide-angle, telephoto and macro), flash and filters and special effects. This course requires an advanced level digital or 25mm camera with adjustable lenses and apertures.
Intermediate Art of Digital and 35mm Photography

Designed to enhance creative composition skills; students will experiment with multiple exposures and abstract and night photography while creating a complete photo essay.
Introduction to Voiceovers

Do you have a voice that people say should be on radio or commercials? Have you thought about doing voiceover work? If so, this one session class will present some details of the industry. You will be coached while recording your voice. This class is instructed by a professional voice actor from the voice acting training company, Voices for All.

Writing the Short Film Script

Nutrition Buzz - Myth & Reality

Which is better; flax seed or chia? What is a GMO and should you be concerned? Can superfoods really help you be healthier? Should you follow a gluten-free diet or is gluten okay? This class will address these questions and more of the somewhat confusing information out there. Developing Meditative Skills for Balance and Well Being

Acupressure for Stress Release Parts 1 and 2
Part 1 is offered as a stand alone module for those wanting to learn acupressure and body-mind practices for self-care. Part 2 builds upon material learned in Part 1. Participants learn to utilize the protocol with others through lecture, demonstration and hands-on practice. Students should wear comfortable clothing and socks.

SERVSAFE CERTIFICATION: FOOD SAFETY MANAGER PREP AND EXAM

Our ServSafe training course provides professional food protection managers with the tools needed to identify and prevent food borne illnesses. It is now mandatory in New Jersey for at least one person in Risk Type 3 food establishments to have this credential. Our 8-hour training provides you with the training as well as the exam. Please obtain and review the textbook before beginning class and bring two forms of ID (one with photo) to class to take the exam. The exam will be given at the end of the second class.

It is recommended that ServSafe certified restaurant personnel in New Jersey obtain re-certification every three years and they are required to do so every five years. In this refresher course, you will review and update your information and be able to take the re-certification exam at the end of the day. Please be sure to bring photo ID and familiarize yourself with the ServSafe Essentials book with the test answer sheet.
