Head Coach Mike Tenaglia
Women’s Basketball
30th season

Mike Tenaglia tells his players that the skills built on the court will serve them well throughout life – and win basketball games too. The Mercer County Community College coaching veteran just completed his 29th year as head coach at Mercer and has over 400 wins in his tenure.

Six of Tenaglia’s teams have won at least 20 games in a season, including the 28-3 squad of 1999-2000 that set the program’s single season record for wins. Most recently, his 2008-09 squad won 20 games, and it included Tenaglia’s 300th career win on Jan. 31, 2009 – a 78-57 win over Salem Community College.

Tenaglia’s run of consecutive winning seasons is 14. His Vikings squads dominated Region 19 from 1998 to 2005, winning seven of the eight titles (all but 2003). They went on to play at the National Junior College Athletic Association Division II Tournament in Hagerstown, Md., in 1999 and 2002.

Name a sport and Tenaglia has likely played or coached it. Born in Philadelphia, he graduated from West Chester University in 1972 with a B.S. in Health and Physical Education. He played four years of soccer at West Chester as well as one year of baseball and two years of club lacrosse and ice hockey.

He was an Assistant Basketball Coach at Devon (Pa.) Prep for two seasons and Immaculata College for one season before spending five seasons as the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Cabrini College. He later started and was the Head Coach of the women’s basketball and softball programs at Delaware County Community College. He also has been an umpire for 18 years.

Tenaglia lives in Lawrenceville, N.J. with his wife Karen.
