Head Coach Kevin Kerins
Baseball
7th season

Following a successful season as interim head coach in 2012, Kevin Kerins officially took over the helm as Mercer's head baseball coach in 2013.  Kerins is a familiar presence on the baseball field at MCCC, as he has served as an assistant coach since 2005 and played for Mercer in 2000, when the Vikings advanced to the Division II Junior College World Series.

Following a season as a player at MCCC, Kerins played three seasons at The College of New Jersey where he earned his bachelor's degree in Technology Education.  He earned his master's degree in Technology Education from Ball State University in 2007.  Kerins has been a teacher at Edison High School since 2003 and was twice nominated "Teacher of the Year."

Kerins has served as an assistant coach at Edison High School and Hamilton West and has coached youth camps at Coastal Carolina University, Rider University and MCCC.  Prior to coming to play at Mercer, Kerins played baseball at Steinert High School and was team captain in 1998, when the Spartans won the Group IV State Baseball title.  They were also the Group III state champs in 1996.

Kerins is grateful for the chance to coach at the school where he got his start.  "I wasn't ready to go to TCNJ right out of high school.  After a year at Mercer, I was ready.  I tell my players, 'I want my story to be your story when you leave here."

Kerins has accumulated a record of 238-74 in six seasons.  In 2014, Kerins led the Vikings to the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, OK.  The Vikings finished 40-8 and capured the Region 19 and Northeast District titles.  At the Division II World Series, the Vikings were eliminated by Pasco-Hernando (FL), who reached the Semifinals of the World Series.  In addition to the team success of Mercer's 2014 team, Kerins coached two First Team All-Americans, Heath Fillmyer and David Osnato.  Fillmyer was drafted in the 5th Round by the Oakland A's in the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft.  Mercer also had another pitcher drafted in 2015, as Nick Economos was selected by the Pittsburgh Pirates in the 21st round.

In 2016, Mercer baseball set another school record for wins going 51-10 and earned another trip to the NJCAA Division II World Series in Enid, OK.  The Vikings went 3-2, beating Brunswick (NC) and twice beating home favorite Western Oklahoma to eliminate them from the World Series.  The Vikings fell one game short of the playing for the National Championship.

In 2017, Mercer won both the Region 19 and Northeast District titles to advance to their second straight NJCAA Division II World Series.  The Vikinga finished as National Runner-Ups after losing in the National Championship game 5-11 to Kankakee (IL) and finished with a 48-14 record.  Dennis Brady and Anthony Peroni were both named First Team All-Americans and both players were also selected in the MLB Draft.  Brady was selected in the 7th Round by the Angels and Peroni in the 14th Round by the Nationals.  Brady was also named the NJCAA Division II National Pitcher of the Year.

Three of the past four years Mercer baseball has been in the top 4 in NJCAA National Polls and participated in the NJCAA World Series.  Mercer has also had the National Pitcher of the Year: Fillmyer in 2014, DiPiazza in 2016 and Brady in 2017.   In 2016, Andrew DiPiazza earned the National Pitcher of the Year honors and was also named a First Team All-American along with Anthony Boselli.  In 2017, Brady and Peroni were both named First Team All-Americans.

"As I move into my sixth season I feel we have set a standard of excellence and expectation.  We are very proud of the student athletes that have used their opportunity to further their careers at four year universities and the MLB Draft."

Kerins has been the Region 19 Coach of the Year four times (2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016) and was also the Rawling Northeast District Coach of the Year in 2014 and 2016.
