MCCC's men's
soccer program welcomes back its 1988 National Championship team
on Saturday, Oct. 18. A recognition ceremony will take place prior
to the start of the Vikings' game against Massasoit Community College
(MA) at 1:30 p.m. at the soccer complex on MCCC's
West Windsor campus, 1200 Old Trenton Road.
This year marks
the 20th reunion for the remarkable 1988 squad, which went 23-0-1
during the season. The Vikings beat Pima Community College (AZ)
1-0 in the final, which took place at Mercer. The national title
was the Vikings' first under Head Coach Charlie Inverso, whose teams
have won an additional four titles during his tenure. Local players
who contributed to the 1988 team include Steinert grads Jim Adams,
Tom Farrel, Jim Keegan, and Dan Rust, along with McCorristin grad
Kevin Kiernan, North Burlington grad Greg McGann, and Lawrence grad
Chris Strycharz.
The current
Vikings squad, which has posted a 9-2 record thus far this season,
is poised to contribute to more Mercer milestones. With three more
wins, the team will earn its 800th victory. With six more wins,
Coach Inverso will total 417, surpassing the legendary Peter Sorber,
men's soccer coach at St. Louis Community College's Florissant Valley
campus and move Inverso into second place nationally behind Mike
Pantalione, the coach from Yavapai College (AZ), who has earned
432 wins.
