Windsor, N.J. -- In its annual tribute to MCCC athletes, the Athletics
Departments hosted a celebratory breakfast on May 4 for students
who participate on Mercer's eight NJCAA Region 19 teams. Students
enjoyed a hot and cold buffet, while administrators presented awards
to those who earned special honors.
Male
and Female Scholar Athlete Awards went to soccer player Ido Ligety
and tennis player Rebecca Wolfe. A second tennis player, Kristina
Holsman, received the Dr. Cynthia Schaffer Memorial Scholarship.
Student
athletes selected for Who's Who Among Students in American Junior
Colleges were presented with certificates. They include Amit
Aburmad, Samantha Cobbs, Maria Eldridge, Samantha Foley, Matt Hill,
Kristina Holsman, Uros Kovacevic, Ido Ligety,
Quentin Loftin, Jessica Maciolek, Carolyn Walters and Rebecaa Wolf.
Exercise Science
Program Coordinator John Kalinowski presented Iron Viking Awards
to baseball player Shawn Reindel and softball player Jenna Berger
for their dedication to fitness during the season and in the off-season
and for maximizing their potential.
According to
John Simone, athletics director and assistant dean for Student Services,
the year was a stellar one for Vikings sports. Highlights include
Region 19 titles for women's soccer, which competed at the district
tournament; men's basketball, which competed at the NJCAA national
tournament; and women's softball, which heads for the NJCAA World
Series May 18. In the Garden State Athletic Conference, Mercer earned
the title in men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball,
and baseball. The men's tennis team was ranked third nationally
at the end of the regular season and competed at the NJCAA national
tournament.
New this year
was the Athlete(s) of the Week feature on the college's website
to recognize outstanding performance during the prior week. Selected
